Solid Gold Friendship

My intuitive friend!

Solid Gold Friendship

Did you ever have a friend that you connected with so well that you could meet their eyes and they pretty much knew what you were thinking? Or maybe they could finish your sentences. They knew your routines so well that they could predict your behavior patterns?

I know I write about my dogs a lot but they are truly magnificent friends. My 14 year old dog, Penny has an uncanny ability to read my mind and sense my mood. When I was recovering from so many surgeries she was content to remain at my side, just happy to share my company. I know if she could talk, she would finish my sentences! She has defined the word loyalty to the fullest extent it can be shown. She has truly been a jewel to me, a real live diamond! Solid gold friendship!

She has been tolerating my new puppy so well, I’m truly amazed. My son told me he thinks she’s doing it for me, so great is her devotion. What an attribute! We could all take lessons from these marvelous creatures about devotion and loyalty. They are absolutely the greatest truest friends.

Last night I went out to the barn thinking that feeding my goats and chickens would be a quick task. I contemplated taking my puppy with me to try and acclimate her to the animals in the barn. I decided, (thankfully) at the last minute to leave her in the house. I took my faithful companion, Penny with me. She has gone with me for so many years, it’s second nature to her. When I opened the barn door and switched the lights on, I knew immediately that something was wrong. My cat and two kittens, that live in the barn were not in sight. They always run to greet Penny and I. Then as I scanned the barn I realized that all, yes all of my chickens were out of their coop and wandering through the barn. It was truly a natural disaster! There are about 40 of them and I could not believe the mess they had made. Apparently when I shut their door it had failed to latch and they had all escaped. I honestly didn’t know where to start. How in the world was I going to round up 40 chickens without help? My faithful 14 year old dog, quickly assessed the situation and went to work. She needed no direction from me. She just did what had to be done. She began directing the chickens back to their coop. I opened the door wide and threw some food in there. As they began to congregate in their pen, Penny rounded up the stragglers. I couldn’t believe it. In a matter of minutes we had gathered all the chickens safely back in their pen and not one word was communicated to my dog. She just did what she always does, she helps me with whatever I need. If she could sweep floors and hose down the barn I’m sure she would have done that also!

Later as I reflected on the situation, I just thought of how we need to be so in tune with God that we can do the same thing my dog did. We can quickly take stock of what our heavenly Father needs us to do for His kingdom and take care of it. We can be so connected that His heart and ours are beating together.
