Tybee Island
A Beautiful Slice Of Paradise!
I think I have two favorite places in the United States. One of them is Glacier National Park and the other is Tybee Island. They are very different from each other but both just lovely incredible places. I am currently visiting Tybee Island on vacation and I’m just enjoying my time here to the fullest.
Tybee Island is a small 2.7 square mile island off the coast of Georgia about a 20 minute drive from Savannah. It is like a mini slice of paradise. We have been coming here for the past 13 years to just relax and enjoy the beautiful weather.
Our rental house sits on the north end of the island and we daily watch the huge ships come into the Savannah river and continue into the port to unload and head back out to sea. We see thousands of birds on the shore as well as flying overhead. I never realized how many types of seagulls there were until I started taking pictures and realized there were many different kinds. The pelicans are also prevalent here and follow the fishing boats closely as they bring in their catch of the day.
There are many things to do on this small island if you’re seeking adventure. The lighthouse is a beautiful structure that has been a beacon to thousands throughout the years. If you can climb the many, many steps to the top, the view is magnificent.
Fort Screven is also on the island and is a nice historical civil war fort to visit and learn about its place in our history.
Farther down the island is the pier. It is a huge pier that is worth visiting. Many fish off the pier and others enjoy the view. Several movies have been filmed on Tybee and currently a major movie called Baywatch is being filmed here. They are constructing some sort of obstacle course down by the pier.
You can go fishing, crabbing, parasailing, kayaking, go on a dolphin boat tour….. there are so many activities to enjoy here. Or you can just simply relax! I love the ocean and enjoy just sitting on the beach and watch the ever changing ocean before me. It’s like watching a movie. Every wave brings forth new things to explore. There are jellyfish scattered along the beach, as well as various shells and shark teeth. The beach was voted the cleanest beach in the United States!
There are a number of places to eat on the island and I have two favorites that are absolutely a must if you visit the island. The first, is called The Breakfast Club. It is definitely an experience. You can watch the cooks as they cook your food and the food is truly delicious. They have an amazing hamburger that will rival any you have ever tasted! You will have to wait in line to be seated but it’s worth the wait. The only negative thing about this place is that they are major Chicago Blackhawks fans. Totally unacceptable.
My second favorite restaurant is the Crab Shack. I don’t even like seafood but this is a must visit place on my list. They have baby alligators enclosed in an outdoor facility and they are enjoyable to see. They have another building that houses big beautiful birds. The restaurant seats 600 people so you can imagine its draw. I had ribs since I don’t care for crabs and they were delicious.
Every single day has been absolutely beautiful since we have been here. The sunset last night was glorious. I will post a picture when I download it.
