Hurricane Katrina Diary

A Tribute To Courage

Hurricane Katrina DiaryHurricane Katrina was the 5th hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was a devestating category 5 and was the costliest  (108 billion) on record. It was one of the 5 deadliest hurricanes in U.S. history. Almost 2000 people died in the hurricane and deadly flooding that followed. It affected 90,000 square miles of the U.S.

Many ordinary citizens rescued survivors with boats, offered food and shelter  and did many heroic things to help their fellow man. One of these people was my daughter Rosemary.

She kept a diary of all that she encountered in the aftermath of that terrible storm. The diary has now been published and ordering information will be posted at the end of the blog. Although the hurricane happened a decade ago the scars remain forever for all those that went through the storm.

The now published book is the account of a young 21 year old girl from Michigan who enlisted with the Red Cross and flew to Louisiana to work on the front lines of the Hurricane Katrina Operation. She fluently spoke several languages and was instrumental in communicating with the survivors in the disaster recovery efforts. She risked her life several times to save others. She was robbed, attacked by fire ants and witnessed many horrible incidents. This is a detailed day to day detailed memoir of those hectic days and all that she encountered in the devastating hurricane aftermath. It is a tribute to the courage and resilience of a young person making a difference in the world. This diary offers the hope that you too will be inspired, make a difference and help someone else today.

So many times we read about these disasters and see the pictures on the news but how many of us actually do anything to help? It’s a good question and one that I believe we should be asking ourselves. There is a whole world around us that needs help. Maybe we can’t drop everything like my daughter did and go work at the disaster site. We can however help those in need that are all around us.

The city of Flint, MI is currently going through a water crisis. There is lead in the pipes contaminating the drinking water and it has caused a huge problem for the city residents.  I heard about a church in Detroit that donated a half a million bottles of water to Flint and it took 60 vehicles to deliver them. It reminded me of that scripture that God will reward just a cup of water given in His name. I thought how wonderful that people are reaching out to their fellow man during this crisis.  When we pray we need to put legs on our prayers! Put those prayers in action.

I encourage all who would like to read the Katrina diary to order it from one of the following sources:
