Honduras Part 16

Tuesday January 30, 2001 Day 16 of Honduras trip

Honduras Part 16Well the day has finally come! !!! We are going home. We went to see the campground where Bro Casco’s church will have a youth camp in April.  It was a long drive through the curving mountain roads.

We then stopped at the orphanage but the director was “too busy” to see us. The reality is that they fear american involvement because they don’t want the children to leave Honduras.  They feel americans will do that instead of helping support their efforts here.  We will have to pursue this through the government.  We need to learn all the regulations and proceed from there.  I believe one day it will happen.

We then ate one final time at Church’s Chicken.  We are now at the airport awaiting our flight to Miami. It has already been delayed an hour. We have said our goodbyes which was very difficult to do. We might have a language barrier but the wonderful experience we shared with our precious brothers and sisters in Christ will be remembered forever.

I’m praying we will still make our connection to Detroit even with the delay. Otherwise we will have to spend the night in Miami.  I can hardly wait to get home!

The airport here in Tegucigalpa is the 3rd most dangerous in the world. It is in a valley surrounded by high mountains. It is very small with just one runway. I remember when we landed we all held our breath as we came over the mountains and saw the tiny little runway! We all clapped and rejoiced when we landed safely. I believe I am overcoming my fear of flying!

Our flight finally took off an hour and a half behind schedule with no explanation of why. We will have to RUN to make our connecting flight! It was so good to have a cup of American coffee.  Oh how I missed it! I can hardly believe it’s over and I actually survived! I had no expectations and therefore I wasn’t disappointed in any way. I handled the hardships fairly well.

We are now over the Florida Keys and the sunset is very beautiful.  I thought how fitting that this trip had begun with a sunrise on our first flight and ending with a sunset.

Well guess what? By the time we got our luggage and went through customs we missed our flight to Detroit by 2 minutes! The airlines paid for us to get a hotel room, transportation and dinner.

The hotel was glorious after Honduras! !! Real carpet and real hot water. We ate the dinner buffet at the hotel. John opened one of the lids and said “look honey, rice and beans!” I just glared at him. I wasn’t really hungry as it was 930 at night but I ate because it was american food. John said the coffee was old but tasted great! I had iced tea for the first time in weeks and it was so wonderful. I really loved being back on American soil. We told the kids we were getting closer!
